A sideline

So I was talking to Parker the other night, when we hit upon a most intriguing idea — set up a sideline to the main RP where people can RP a bit more freely and do character development. Pretty much just get on IRC or some other chatroom at a set time every week or every other week, and set up something small with whoever shows up.

And as for setting, we were thinking something related to the current mission but always set during downtime. Not necessarily in continuity with the main timeline, just something for people to do for shits and giggles and to develop their characters a bit more -- and Parker also suggested that we could do small missions related to what's going on in the main timeline, such as doing raiding parties when we were back on Arcturia, standing watch on Whiskey Zero, shit like that. In my experience nothing large-scale works in real time RP, since you can't coordinate a lot of people -- here I'm thinking less than ten people, but it could still work out pretty well. I think it'd be fun, either way.

Thoughts?

DO WANT. The only thing wrong with that, though, is that the ship's bandwidth is closely guarded by the gnomes of the shipbowels and getting onto anything like IRC would make IT Chiefs have heart attacks. I'll have to wait to do that when deployment's over.

I'd suggest another client, but the idea of RPing on AIM or Skype gives me nightmares.

How much longer you at sea, broski?

I wish I knew. That date has been changed so many times that I'm left spinning.

Some of us are not IRC savvy. So why not use Oasiz chat rooms. It free.

IRC's just a random example, really -- and if we end up going with that, QuakeNet and Freenode both have qwebirc and it's balls easy to use. There are a number of chat systems that could be integrated into the website as well.

Edit: Whichever system we end up with, I'm already working on integrating it with the board. Right now I just need to find a way to count how many people are in the chatroom and display it elsewhere.

I like this idea. It fits in well with the idea I had for redoing the site. We shall make it happenz.

Aw, shit. I just had an idea.

Jer, going off'a what you said about player-run missions, presumably in some kind of sandbox -- y'know, we could actually run entire missions on the chatroom, and then post the logs in the missions forum. Shit would be pretty ballin'.
