The Plot of Rim

They call it Rim. They also call it the arm of the galaxy. Neither statement is really accurate, per se. Not in a literal sense, at least. Those are just nick names smeared onto the gigantic outer portion of the galaxy that extends past Earth and her core colonies. Rim though…it’s something else. Imagine the United American civil war when Mexico tried to secede. Plenty of civilized interaction near the populated areas…and plenty of fighting out near the shit hole spots where no one wanted to live. It’s like that out in Rim, too. There are a lot of big colonies. Populations into the hundreds of millions in some of them. But there are also a lot of really under populated areas as well. Kind of like…big ass galactic ghettos. Yeah, there’s a lot of people in them, causing problems. Being hellions. Rebelling. There are also the menagerie of other sentient beings too, and they cause just as much trouble as the humans do. Arcturians, Greens…a few other lesser known assholes that only pop up once every few years…but they are out there.

Point is…Rim isn’t so much a rim. It’s more like…the greater portion of the circle with the civilized human area closer to Earth and her core colonies. We know about all there is to know when you get close to the home world. Out here, though, it’s like the wild wild west. People fighting people. People fighting the uh…”galactic residents”. And you know what sucks the worst about it? We’re like the new kid in school…getting bullied pretty much by everyone. It’s pretty easy to see why they need Marines when you venture out into this mess.

After all, someone has to be here to lay hands on some of these bastards…

Rim

An Aliens Universe RPG

Plot and Corresponding Information

**********

The year is 2244. Humanity has moved from the surface of Earth and into the cosmos, where they have begun to terraform and populate a number of new worlds for human civilization. The United America’s, European Union, Japan, and Conglomerate of South Africa lead humanity as the four super powers of the world. Unfortunately, the UA and EU are constantly in a state of conflict with CSA and Japan, making infighting a constant problem. Making it worse, separatists from each country use organized crime and militant tactics to put pressure on governments and civilian populations in order to further their own agenda.

And then there are the extraterrestrials we found…

Humans expanded away from Earth and her core colonies around the year 2155 and out into the outer arm of the galaxy, later coming to be known as Rim. Original colonies were small terraforming outposts, but these small outposts made for good footholds where humans could regroup and press farther into the stars. By 2183 we began finding worlds that were more Earth-like and easier to terraform for our own benefit…if terraforming was needed at all. Tiny outposts began to blossom into sprawling metropolitan areas, not only expanding human resources and living space but also pushing us closer and closer to extraterrestrial organisms that were not afraid to fight for their own existence. Diseases. Hostile organisms.

And other sentient races.

It was very quickly established that life was not unique to Earth, nor was intelligence. The first intelligent civilization humans encountered was the Arcturians; an emerging race of people that were not too different from us. They were shorter, had reversed rolls in genitalia, and blue (which subsequently earned them the nick-name ‘Smurfs’), but otherwise their evolution was similar to our own. They were behind humans by a few thousand years in technology…but that was easily trumped by human interference, which catapulted this emerging race from the bronze age to the space age in a matter of decades. The Arcturians weren’t the only intelligent beings we encountered, though.

There was much, much more out there.

And the intelligent ones weren’t even the worst monsters we found out there…

Expansion into Rim sent humanity down its own self destructive path. Within a few decades the United Americas were in a near permanent state of conflict with South Africa and Japan. Today, large scale fighting is uncommon, but small skirmishes, guerilla tactics, and all sorts of espionage are rampant. Most of the fighting between South Africa and the UA are the result of South Africa’s support of the Arcturian Rebel Militia, a group of Arcturians hell bent on “freeing” the world of Arcturia from the outside influence of humans.

Small organized crime syndicates have integrated themselves into societies all over the local cluster of Rim and its most important worlds. The peddling of new and powerful synthetic drugs are a common place theme, as well as Sentient Trafficking, money laundering for major (and corrupt) corporations, illegal android trades, and even weapons and genetic black markets.

In an effort to maintain the peace, the United States Colonial Marine Corps has deployed the 22nd Marine Assault Unit to the Rim local cluster, using the highly trained Marines of the MAU to support local colonial police forces as well as defend American interest from enemy interference, be that interference terran or extraterrestrial in origin. With an integrated robotic / synthetic and human police force in every human colony, the Marines have become the go-to guys for all sorts of missions that fall outside of the capabilities of these police forces.

<<<…>>> <<<…>>> <<<…>>>

Space is ruled by the two Big C’s: Corporations and criminals. Criminals we’ve explained. Major companies such as Weyland-Yutani and Hyperdyne have integrated the need for their materials so deep into human society that it would be literally impossible to survive without them. While these companies employ untold numbers of people throughout the galaxy and thus create jobs and make economy possible in off-world locations, they are also indirectly responsible for high rates of crime, capsizing small businesses, making people overly dependent on technology, and bringing about negative results in all areas of the human infrastructure with corporate corruption.

The vast number of major companies and conglomerates in the universe mean people have almost limitless job opportunities available to them. Few jobs are filled to peak, and most anyone with the proper motivation and education is able to excel as a repercussion of the lack of personnel. There is a reason that Rim has also been coined “opportunities frontier”.

In any event, it’s easy to see that in Rim…one becomes whatever one wants…
