To Dive or Not to Dive, That is The Question

Post by Radley, B. G. »

So, I've been talking to my first class and I've come up with my ultimatum when it comes to staying in the military and the Navy, period. This is something I've been talking about for a while and I already know that I hate being a Logistics Specialist. So, what I've come up with is this: I'll stay in if I'm offered a Crypto rate again or have me go Diver. As it is, all of the CT rates are backed up like no one's business, but the Diver quotas are pretty open (you know, it being a hard thing to become and whatnot). So, where all this leads to is that Diver is something I could probably be eligable to cross rate to. If I don't stay in, I'll be going to college for a major in English and a minor in Publication Studies, courtesy of Uncle Sam.

But the ultimate question is, "If I'm offered Diver and get it, should I do it?"

I'd go to college (but if you want to become something in journalism then don't do publication studies, take political science, social psych or an academic specialization like history or law)

If the navy's not doing it for you then chances are a diving course won't help for long and it doesn't teach you much that's useful outside the service.
Take the college course and maybe take ROTC on the side. Then you can graduate and get a job elsewhere or if you're still interested in the navy, you can always re-app and they might give you that diving qualification and a fancy hat to go with it.

PS: This opinion is based on knowledge and experience of the British educational system and military

Along with underwater welding, I'd be able to do underwater salvaging, underwater construction and demolition, take part in search and rescue operations, and stuff of the like. It's almost constant shore command that gives me ample time to pay off bills and work on saving more money before I go to college. And when it comes to college, I'm going to learn to be a professional editor, to work for a publishing house/company. I first run through college helped me learn that I abhor journalism to the very core.

As long as you learn extra skills aside from diving, I'd go for it. You can make BIG money doing that shit in the civilian world, especially welding. Contruction could be handy too, because bridge companies are always needing divers for stuff.

So, I'm going to do it. The events of this morning and this afternoon have lifted the burden on my shoulders. I got fired from my job as Work Center Supervisor because my Chief thought I wasn't working and finally found a way to get rid of me. Fuck this rate. Fuck this ship. I'm going to do Diver and I'm going to get big bucks for it. Thanks for your help, guys.
